Lime Water Recycling & Reuse System
In 2015, the tannery took a proactive step by installing a purpose-built, innovative lime water recycling system, going beyond regulatory requirements and without any statutory mandates from enforcement agencies. This system allows the tannery to recycle and reuse approximately 600 KL of lime water annually, significantly reducing fresh water consumption and minimizing the water pollution load on the PETP and CETP by the same amount.
Additionally, the system enables the recovery of 80% of re-lime liquor from the 125% float, leading to a reduction in water consumption by 800 liters per ton of processed leather. The initiative also results in lime savings of 15-25%, contributing to both resource conservation and cost efficiency.
Hair Saving Screen
In 2016, our tannery was selected by UNIDO for the installation of a Hair Saving Screen (PDU), an innovative system designed to recover hair from the tanning process rather than chemically burning it, which is a common practice. This breakthrough solution has significantly improved our environmental impact by reducing the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in the effluent by 50%, helping to lower water pollution and improve effluent quality.
The Hair Saving Screen (PDU) works by efficiently separating hair from the tanning effluent. After the hair is recovered, we wash off any remaining lime traces to ensure it is clean and safe for reuse. Instead of discarding the hair as waste, we repurpose it as an organic fertilizer, using it as agricultural manure for our green belt development. This process not only reduces waste but also contributes to sustainable land development and helps in maintaining our green spaces.
By implementing this sustainable solution, our tannery demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility, resource conservation, and reducing its ecological footprint. This initiative reflects our ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable, circular production process.
